Up one level

Remember the recording room? I still have a few old cassette tapes I made there, transferred from vinyl. The site had some good albums when I was there - well, before Disco took off anyway. The USAF would send up new albums each month.

Remember when we had no package mail for nearly a year due to the Turkish embargo? Actually you could ship single cassette tape boxes and letter envelopes via first class mail, but that was it. No "Care Packages" from home, and lots of empty shelves in the BX and commisary at Karamursel. The Turkish guards searched the trucks coming on-site for unauthorized shipments from the States. It was pretty easy to fake the guards out though. It felt like being in jail.

On a lighter note...

Some of the guys completely covered every square inch of their barracks room walls with Playboy and Penthouse pictures. It got to be almost a contest. One room had pictures plastered inside the overhead light fixtures, behind chest of drawers, on the fridge, everywhere!

We also ran the AFRTS radio station audio over one of the lines and had speakers set up in a few places. You could hear music or sports broadcasts in lo-fi.

Some of the DET 150 tech controllers played music tapes over spare Tropo voice channels, acting as DJs for other comm sites around the world. picnik A site party at Lake Izmir Plane reflector hike Our hike to the plane reflector. You can see the holes in the reflector caused by one of the previous commanders blasting it with a shotgun. He was trying to get the ice buildup removed during a winter storm that was causing the Karamursel signal to be lost. We bounced the Karamursel signal off this thing to get around a mountain peak that was in the way.
