Up one level

I brought all my MARS (Military Affiliate Radio System) ham radio gear with me to the site. I had a couple teletype machines (really!) and a relay rack full of radio gear in my barracks room. It was pretty cramped in the room and the noise was horrendous. I strung a long wire antenna up one of the towers behind the barracks. It iced up during a winter storm and fell down from the weight. Before the antenna came down, I'd watch the teletype machines bash out Russian propaganda by the ream. Remember, this WAS during the cold war. Anybody remember Captain Vercher's jeep ride one night? I'll never tell :-)

On the 4th of July in 1976 (the USA Bicentennial) some of the guys climbed the big tower with the "muscle" LOS antenna and strung up an American flag at its highest point. The Turks were so pissed! They told us to take it down immediately - we finally got around to it 2 or 3 days later. I guess they were too scared to climb up and take it down themselves. This was during the time when the Turks took over all the American bases in protest against our witholding fighter planes and other military goodies they had already paid for. Congress held up the shipments to Turkey due to the Turkish war in Cypress.
