I searched around the Sahin Tepe area using a satellite photo viewer and found the old building foundations of TUSLOG DET 150!
By installing some free software, you can see it too and take a virtual tour from space. Note: You need a broadband connection or one hell of a lot of patience. This thing downloads a lot of data to create the 3-D images of the earth in realtime.
Unfortunately the satellite photo is pretty dark ( I guess the weather wasn’t so great on the day of the satellite pass) but you can clearly see the foundations for the barracks and chow hall and some of the foundations for Tropo and Power Pro. You can also just make out the old Turkish Turnstyle communications site foundations that was just down the road, a few hundred yards from Sahin Tepe. Also visible are the stairs to Tropo and the foundation for the big diesel tank near the gate. It might help to turn up your monitor brightness. I switched from my darkish work computer monitor to my very bright home LCD monitor and it looks much better.
To see this stuff, you need to first download and install the GoogleEarth program. Its free! I like the beta version, and my description covers that one. The stable version has a little bit different controls, so it won’t exactly jibe with my description below. Both versions work pretty much the same, though.
Now that you have it installed, click on these to view some of the old sites around TUSLOG DET 150:
The site foundations to view the site.
Turkish Turnstyle Comm Site
Elephant Cage antenna at Karamursel
Gemlik Coast and pier
You can change the view angle and rotate the mountain around to look at it from all angles. Click on the compass goodie on the upper left corner of GoogleEarth and drag it around in a circle to spin the image around to get a good look at the mountain top from all angles. There is also a hidden view angle control above the compass control to change it. You can look straight down or at an angle to view the terrain better.
Areas in gaudy green and yellow are low resolution – zooming in on these areas won’t work.
I hope that the satellite photo company re-surveys the site some day when the weather is better.
Can anyone find the Karamursel plane reflector? I looked all over for it, but I guess the years have taken their toll on the foundation and fence for that thing. If I recall correctly it was somewhere north of the site, up on a ridge.
Anyway, looking at satellite pictures sure beats buying a plane ticket to western Turkey – at least price-wise
While you are zooming around the world with GoogleEarth, you can check out the physical location of this web site by clicking here. Yes, I really do live way out in the sticks, and I have come a long way since my brief stay at Sahin Tepe.
Other fun stuff: Check out Area 51. I don’t see any UFOs…
Enjoy!
